Frequently Asked Questions

WHY DOESN'T MY REGULAR OPTICIAN OFFER OVC?

Ortho-K fitting requires specialist training and additional equipment not found in all opticians. The lenses are custom designed for you, they are not "off the shelf" like soft lenses. It requires additional time, care and experience to successfully fit OVC lenses.

CAN I WEAR OVC OVERNIGHT CONTACT LENSES?

Around 75% of all short-sighted people can wear overnight contact lenses and 100,000 people now use overnight vision correction.

HOW QUICKLY WILL MY VISION IMPROVE?

In just ONE NIGHT around 70% vision improvement is achieved! So an average prescription of -3.00D would reduce to approximately -0.90D - which is within the legal driving limit - after only one night. By the end of the first week the prescription would have reduced further to around -0.30D. If required low power soft lenses will be supplied by your OVC accredited practitioner to ensure you have good functioning vision during this first week.

WILL MY VISION FADE AT THE END OF THE DAY ?

Over night contact lenses will give at least 36 hours of full vision correction. The lenses are designed to over correct your sight - at the beginning of the day you will have better than 20:20 vision! This ensures that your vision will NOT fade at the end of the day if you wear them every night as prescribed.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I FORGET TO PUT MY LENSES IN ONE NIGHT?

The lenses are designed to give you at least 36 hours of full correction. If you forget to insert your lenses that night you should have good natural vision until lunchtime the following day. After this you vision will start to fade but it will still be better than usual. If you need to, you can simply re-insert your lenses at anytime and you will then see perfectly.

ARE THEY COMFORTABLE AND SAFE TO SLEEP IN?

On the first night you wear your lenses you may find that you want to close your eyes and go straight to sleep. Any discomfort is caused by the eyelid flickering over the lens but once the eye is closed you will have no problem sleeping. Over the first week your eyes will quickly become accustomed to the lenses as the new lens shape forms on the eye and you will find that you could happily read or sit and watch TV. OVC contact lenses are designed and clinically approved for over night wear. They are made from a special material manufactured by Bausch and Lomb which allows six times more oxygen to reach the eye than ordinary soft contact lenses. They are custom made and can only be prescribed by a qualified optician who is also accredited, so you can be assured that your medical welfare is always uppermost. The risks associated with wearing overnight vision correction lenses are the same as with any contact lens wear.

HOW OFTEN ARE THE LENSES REPLACED?

Every six months. Build-up of microscopic particles in the internal "treatment zone" causes the lenses to become less effective over time. Wear and tear from cleaning and handling the contact lenses can cause warping and minute scratches to the lens surface. These both cause the lenses to become less effective.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

The risks are no greater than with conventional contact lens wear. This is associated with poor hygiene from things like not washing your hands and re-using solutions. OVC contact lenses are only supplied as part of an ongoing treatment package covered by the monthly direct debit paid to your accredited optician.

CAN I SEE WHILE WEARING THE LENSES?

Yes. With your lenses are in, you’ll be able to see perfectly. But once they’re out, you will see even better. It's great - you have 20:20 vision on a 24/7 basis! Just imagine. If you wake up in the middle of the night you will be able to see, the alarm clock will be clear when you wake up and when you remove your lenses and take a shower you will also have great vision. You can't say that for conventional contact lenses or glasses!

CAN I WEAR THE LENSES DURING THE DAY?

Yes - whilst they are designed for sleeping in, they can be worn for daytime vision too. So should you miss a night and then need to drive the following day, you can simply re-insert the lenses and you will again have perfect vision.

HOW LONG DO I NEED TO KEEP THE LENSES IN FOR?

To ensure you achieve maximum vision correction it is recommended that you wear your lenses for at least 6 hours whilst sleeping. If on occasion it happens that you do not wear the lenses for sufficient time - on a flight for example - after which you need to drive; simply reinsert your lenses and you will see perfectly. With OVC, you see clearly with the lenses in OR out of your eyes.

I HAVE HAD LASER SURGERY - AM I STILL A CANDIDATE?

No, unfortunately not. Laser eye surgery permanently changes the shape of the eye by surgically removing tissue and you could have a problem with other types of contact lenses. The big advantage of overnight vision correction is that the eye is reshaped by redistributing cells. It is a temporary change which means you have to wear the lenses every night. However if you wish, or need to move to another method of vision correction as your sight changes with age you still have a full range of options.

WILL OVERNIGHT LENSES HELP SOLVE DRY EYES?

Yes. Dry eye is primarily caused by wearing conventional contact lenses in air-conditioned offices and from staring at a computer screen, TV and even your mobile phone for too long. This causes the eye to dry out. By wearing lenses at night you avoid both dry eye because you have natural vision and there is no barrier on the eye to exacerbate this problem.

CAN I STILL HAVE LASER SURGERY AFTER OVERNIGHT VISION CORRECTION

YES. The beauty of overnight vision correction is that it is completely reversible and should you decide in the future you want to opt for surgical correction, you can.

IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT AND CAN CHILDREN WEAR THEM?

There is no minimum or maximum age which limits wear. Children adapt very quickly even as young as 5. There are so many advantages for children wearing OVC lenses. The most exciting news is that new research (the 'SMART' study in the US) indicates that wearing OVC lenses as a child can halt or even reverse early signs of myopia. The lenses act like a retainer holding the eye in the correct shape as they grow. Many children are self-conscious about wearing prescription glasses and this can affect their participation and confidence in sport and other activities. Parents also have total control of their child's vision as the lenses are inserted and removed at home. So you can be sure that your child has not removed or broken their glasses or lost a lens.
