CONTACT LENSES FOR CHILDREN
CAN CHILDREN WEAR CONTACT LENSES?
Yes, but many parents do not realise that contact lenses for children are an option because many opticians do not suggest them. Yet children often adapt better than adults to contact lenses. Overnight Vision Correction contact lenses are even better because they are only worn at night while sleeping and research has shown that they can halt increases in short-sight prescription.
WHAT AGE DO CHILDREN HAVE TO BE TO WEAR CONTACT LENSES?
There is no minimum age that children can wear contact lenses. The key factor is that a child is comfortable handling contact lenses and motivated to wear them. We have children as young as six years old wearing OVC lenses.

WHICH ARE THE BEST CONTACT LENSES FOR CHILDREN?
Overnight lenses are the best contact lenses for children because various research studies have shown that wearing overnight contact lenses as soon as short-sightedness (myopia) in children is diagnosed can slow or even halt the further progression of myopia. So not only do children avoid the inconvenience of wearing glasses, overnight lenses can also help improve their eyesight.

HOW DO OVERNIGHT CONTACT LENSES FOR CHILDREN WORK?
OVC contact lenses gently reshape the surface of the eye while the child is sleeping. When the lenses are removed in the morning light enters the eye at the correct angle so that it focuses on the retina. This is why you can see when you are not wearing lenses.
Overnight contact lenses also act like a retainer holding the eye in the correct shape as a child grows. This stops the eye elongating, the cause of myopia in children and prevents the prescription increasing with age.
WHAT OTHER ADVANTAGES ARE THERE TO OVERNIGHT VISION CORRECTION?
With overnight vision correction parents have total control over their child's eyesight. Because the lenses are inserted, removed and stored at home parents do not have to worry if their child has lost broken or just decided not to wear their glasses in school. As a parent you can be confident that your child has perfect vision all day long. Research has shown that children perform better at school if they are not wearing glasses.

WHAT IS THE EVIDENCE THAT OVERNIGHT LENSES CAN HALT MYOPIA IN CHILDREN?
The SMART study is a 5 year program involving 300 children which uses overnight contact lenses . The 3rd year interim results released earlier this year. After three years, the control group wearing conventional soft contact lenses experienced an average rate of increase in their prescription of more than 1.00 OD (4 lines on an eye test chart). However, those children wearing the overnight contact lenses for children experienced no clinically significant increase in their myopia. Many other studies support this outcome.
